“Absolutely nonsense” – Ralf Rangnick Responds To Cristiano Ronaldo Captaincy Rumors at Manchester United. Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick has dismissed speculation that Cristiano Ronaldo could take over as captain from Harry Maguire.
This season has been difficult for the Old Trafford club both on and off the field. They fired club legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in November and are actively fighting for a top-four spot. There have also been whispers of discord in the dressing room.
According to reports this week, Ronaldo and Maguire have met with Rangnick about the captaincy position at Manchester United. There have been recommendations that the Red Devils captain may be compelled to relinquish the captaincy, with Portugal’s superstar nudged to take over.
Rangnick, on the other hand, has dismissed those reports as ‘nonsense.’ The former RB Leipzig manager insisted that he has not discussed a possible captaincy change with any of his players.
The German tactician went on to say that Maguire will be the club’s captain at least until the end of the season. During a press conference, Rangnick stated:
“This is absolutely nonsense. I have never spoken to any player about a chance in captaincy, Harry [Maguire] is aware of that and Cristiano [Ronaldo]. I have never spoken with any player about a change of captaincy. This has never been an issue. It is me who decides who is the captain. Harry is our captain and he will stay our captain until the end of the season and there is nothing else to add on to that.”
Rangnick denies rumours on Cristiano Ronaldo as new captain: “I have never spoken with any player about a change of captaincy. This has never been an issue”. 🔴 #MUFC
