Burkina Faso and Guinea became the sixth and seventh countries to confirm their participation in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon), which will be held in Cameroon next year.

Burkina Faso, the 2013 runners-up, won an Afcon berth with a 0-0 draw away to Uganda in Group B, and with Malawi beating South Sudan 1-0 in Omdurman; the Cranes must avoid defeat in Lilongwe on Monday or risk missing a spot in next year’s finals at the expense of the Flames.

Guinea won 1-0 in Group A against Mali, who had already qualified, thanks to a single goal from Seydouba Soumah. Guinea will play in the 24-team competition, which has been postponed by a year due to Covid-19. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) for government intervention had suspended Chad, but victory sealed Namibia’s fate.

Sudan kept their 2021 Afcon qualification hopes alive with a 2-0 victory over Sao Tome and Principe in Group C. This brings them level on nine points with both Ghana and South Africa.

Rwanda sparked their hopes of reaching the finals with a 1-0 victory over Mozambique. But the game of the day was in Bahir Dar, where Ethiopia thrashed Madagascar 4-0 to take command of Group K ahead of their trip to the Ivory Coast next week.

The 75th minute was the turning point in a relatively uneventful match. Seydouba Soumah pounced on a loose ball on the edge of the area before smashing a strong effort past the Les Aigles goalkeeper.

With a win in Namibia on Sunday, Guinea will go top of Group A, and Mali’s 2021 Afcon qualification campaign will come to an end.
