The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner finally got his hands on football’s biggest prize on Sunday, helping Argentina defeat France on penalties in the World Cup final to end the South American nation’s 36-year wait for a third title.

Messi afterwards posted a message and photos to his 403 million Instagram followers. The post had over 61 million likes at the time of writing. It breaks the previous record of World Record Egg, which has more than 56 million likes for a basic egg shot.

 In the caption of the Instagram post, Messi wrote: “Thank you very much to my family, to all who support me, and also to all who believed in us.

 “We demonstrate once again that Argentines when we fight together and united we are capable of achieving what we set out to do. The merit belongs to this group, which is above individuals. It is the strength of all fighting for the same dream that was also the dream of all Argentines… We did it!!!”

Messi was instrumental in Argentina’s 4-2 victory over France in the final, scoring two goals and converting his spot-kick in the shootout that followed the 3-3 deadlock. The 35-year-old superstar of Paris Saint-Germain won the Golden Ball and Man of the Match awards in the World Cup twice in his career.
