Following weeks of speculation, it looks that Napoli midfielder Lorenzo Insigne will leave Italy for the MLS. According to Sky Sports Italia’s Gianluca Di Marzio, the Euro 2020 champion has agreed to terms with Toronto FC, who will pay him a record-breaking $13 million every season.
When his current contract at Naples expires in June, Insigne is set to join Toronto. The striker will sign a five-and-a-half-year contract with the MLS club. In the process, he will become the league’s highest-paid player, surpassing Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who earned $7.3 million with the Los Angeles Galaxy in 2019.
After coming up through Napoli’s development program, the 30-year-old Lorenzo Insigne has spent the most of his career with the club. Inter Milan was keen to pursue the Italian international when his contract expires in the summer, but he refuses to play for any other Serie A team because he believes it would be demeaning to Napoli.
This is a fantastic addition to the MLS. More high-profile names continue to cross the Atlantic, with Luis Suarez being connected with David Beckham’s Inter Miami. After Sebastian Giovinco’s successful tenure at Toronto FC, the club is no stranger to having Italians. It’ll be intriguing to see whether Lorenzo Insigne can prove that he’s worth his money for a team trying to reclaim its Eastern Conference prominence.
“This is a historic and exciting day for our club,” said Toronto president Bill Manning.
“Lorenzo is a world-class attacking player in the prime of his career. He was a European champion with Italy and has performed on the biggest stages during his club career with Napoli.”
“Lorenzo has the talent to change games. He plays the game with joy and passion, and our fans and supporters are going to love watching him as a member of our team.”

Toronto head coach Bob Bradley says he’s looking forward to Insigne’s arrival in July.
“His ability to create chances for himself and his teammates is special,” stated Bradley. “Having watched him for many years, I also know he’s also a player who works for the team. “Lorenzo is the kind of player you come to watch, because there’s always a chance he’ll do something unforgettable.”
