Paul Merson Says Arsenal’s Star Isn’t Good Enough To Play For Wolverhampton Wanderers. Former Arsenal forward Paul Merson has launched a stinging attack on Gunners attacker Eddie Nketiah. The former England international-turned-television pundit claims Nketiah isn’t even talented enough to play for bottom-of-the-table Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Arsenal was dealt a crushing setback during the 2022 FIFA World Cup when Gabriel Jesus suffered a major knee injury. The Brazilian international had surgery and is likely to be out for three months.
Nketiah has enormous shoes to fill in Jesus’ absence, and Paul Merson has stated that the youngster is not up to the challenge. Merson believes Nketiah is ineligible to lead the line for clubs in the lowest half of the table. In his Daily Star column, he stated:
“I try not to read too much into friendlies but it’s a massive worry for Arsenal that they’re now relying on out-of-form Eddie Nketiah when the Premier League returns.”
“Without being horrible, what Premier League team does Eddie Nketiah get in? Wolves are bottom for instance, they’re desperate for a goal and they wouldn’t go and get him.”
Merson has claimed that his previous side could be in difficulty over the Christmas period due to three difficult matchups. He continued:
“For me, it’s really worrying. Arsenal have three very difficult games over Christmas in West Ham, Brighton and Newcastle. Nketiah might deliver for three games but I just don’t see him doing it for 10 or more matches.”
Eddie Nketiah has not really thrived at the senior level despite being fairly prolific at the youth level for club and nation. With 16 goals in 17 games, the 23-year-old currently holds the record for England’s most under-21 goals scored.
Nketiah has scored 35 goals in 38 games for England at various junior levels. He has also scored 46 goals in 60 games for Arsenal at various ages. At the senior level at the Emirates, the Gunners striker’s situation has not exactly improved. He has played 111 appearances for the north Londoners so far, scoring just 26 goals.
