Pundits Hail Benni McCarthy As Manchester United Forwards Flare! Manchester United returned to English Premier League action on Tuesday night, defeating Nottingham Forest 3-0 at Old Trafford.
Manchester United’s goal scorers included two forwards in Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial. Two players are under the supervision of Benni McCarthy.
McCarthy was, of course, named Manchester United’s forwards coach by new manager Erik ten Hag at the start of the season. The former Bafana Bafana international was entrusted with getting the club’s forwards blazing in a season where things were already looking bleak in the first few weeks.
His debut game was one of Manchester United’s most professional performances of the season. The Red Devils defeated Arsenal 3-1 at Old Trafford, becoming the first and only team this season to defeat the current log leaders. Two attackers scored, a debut goal for Brazilian Antony and a brace for homegrown star Rashford.
Rashford had been a source of concern for United fans prior to McCarthy’s arrival, but that game seemed to ignite a renaissance in him. He already has six league goals, and South Africa’s all-time leading goal scorer has already credited him for his comeback.
As Rashford and teammate striker Martial scored a quick double against Forest, the cameras swiftly moved to McCarthy, with both match analysts heaping plaudits on the 2004 Champions League winner with FC Porto. Of course, it was under him that talented Argentine forward Alejandro Ganarcho rose to prominence.

McCarthy will be trying to have a similar impact on the combination of Jadon Sancho, Anthony Elanga, and Antony who, after an early purple spell, has had both goals and performances dry up of late.
