ROB HOLDING EXPLAINS WHY OZIL WAS BETTER THAN SANTI CARZOLA AT ARSENAL. Once upon a time, Santi Cazorla was an attacking midfielder. He was placed in the most advanced midfield position imaginable as soon as he arrived from a financially challenged Malaga team in 2012. He thrived in that position for most of his inaugural season.

However, Carzola never returned to the middle since the arrival of Mesut Ozil. Cazorla’s quickness and two-footedness on the left appear to appeal to Wenger more than his natural position in the centre of the offensive midfield.

According to Rob Holding, Arsene Wenger made the correct choice by playing Ozil in Carzola’s position. Speaking on Jaxxon Podcast via The Sun, Holding said that even though Carzola had good qualities, he affirmed that Ozil was the magician.

The English defender said that he saw glimpses of Ozil’s magical touch during a training session with the German playing on the same team as Mkhitaryan.

“A lot of Arsenal players have always said Santi Cazorla [is the best] because with both feet, technically he’s so clean.

“I agree completely and I think he was great, but Mesut Ozil just used to do these magic things and you’d see these little glimpses in training.

“I remember a session, when [Henrikh] Mkhitaryan had just signed. We did a possession-based drill and those two were on the same team.

“They just completely ran it around us, just passing to each other, barely using anyone else. It was frightening. I thought we were going to win the league. I thought with these guys we’re just going to rip it up now and it’s going to be incredible. “His [Ozil’s] football intelligence is just so high.”
