Ten Ha Explains Why Ronaldo He Didn’t Play In The Manchester Derby. Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has claimed that he left Cristiano Ronaldo on the bench during the 6-3 defeat to Manchester City out of respect for the forward.

Ten Hag started Marcus Rashford ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo in the Manchester United attack on Sunday. In the 59th minute, he substituted Anthony Martial for the Englishman, but he left CR7 on the bench.

During the derby humiliation, Victor Lindelof, Fred, Casemiro, and Luke Shaw all came on as substitutes.

“I wouldn’t bring him in out of respect for Cristiano, for his big career,” Ten Hag told reporters after the match in a press conference.

“The other thing was the advantage that I could bring on Anthony Martial. He needs the minutes, but I don’t want to point it out like that.”

City won with hat-tricks from Phil Foden and Erling Haaland on Sunday. The 6-3 defeat also ended United’s four-match winning streak in the Premier League, though Ten Hag’s team remains sixth in the standings.

After Antony grabbed a goal back for the Red Devils, Martial did score twice off the bench to save some of the team’s pride. Thursday’s Europa League match against Omonia requires Ronaldo and the club to go to Cyprus.
